The Principal Research Engineer executes a variety of highly specialized/ technical, business development and leadership activities. This individual provides advanced expertise in the areas of flight dynamics, control, and related fields.

 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree in Engineering with 10+ years of experience or Ph.D. with 5 yrs experience in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering or Applied Mathematics or equivalent field
  • Proven technical ability and experience in dynamics and controls theory or related discipline/field
  • Extensive flight test experience and skillset for assessing vehicle performance, flying, and handling qualities and related system performance
  • Comfortable supervising a team of engineers
  • Comfortable generating business
  • Strong skills with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or equivalent. Working knowledge of C/C++ a plus.
  • Comfortable working on a wide range of projects 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supports determining top level technical direction in alignment with company vision including short term and long-term goals.

• Along with Engineering Management, defines technical focal point of Business development areas and directs deep technical activities.

• Serves as Principal Investigator (PI) on select commercial and government programs.

• Performs all tasks with consistency, accuracy, and attention to detail.

• Oversees the development of new IP, candidate products, and technical initiatives including executing beyond Phase II for SBIR programs.

• Manages multiple contracts that involve tracking budgets, ensuring successful deliverables, and managing several engineers.

• Develops test protocols/procedures, collects, and analyzes data, and creates detailed reports.

• Prepares project plans, schedules, and budgets.

• Oversees and executes technical projects and activities while remaining within established schedule and budget constraints.

• Communicates with customers in the course of completing assigned technical work.

• Supports, identifies, and secures new business in technical area of expertise and related areas that meet Business Development goals.

• Submits proposals and writes statements of work for commercial consulting and government contracts.

• Builds and maintains relationships with technical decision makers.

• Participates in marketing campaigns that align with company objectives.

• Supports marketing campaigns (conferences, trade shows, etc.)

• Creates white-papers and other technical marketing material and presents at selected professional conferences and seminars.

• Presents at selected technical meetings and conferences.

• Sets goals and objectives for selected staff engineers that align with company strategy to inspire, motivate, and produce results.

• Supports an effective employee selection, hiring, onboarding and professional development process.

• Manages talent performance through coaching, positive communication, consistent feedback, one to ones and team meetings resulting in improved performance.

• Ensures all Company timelines are met for processes, trainings, and initiatives.

• Participates in Company sponsored events.

• Maintains project files and appropriate records of work, compliant with company and aerospace industry standards, practices, and regulations.

• Performs other duties as assigned. 

 

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

 

• Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree in Engineering with 10+ years of experience or Ph.D. with 5 yrs experience in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering or Applied Mathematics or equivalent field.

• Proven technical ability and experience in dynamics and controls theory or related discipline/field

• Extensive flight test experience and skillset for assessing vehicle performance, flying, and handling qualities and related system performance.

• Familiarity with Part 23, Part 25, Part 27 and/or other related FAA or similar EASA requirements.

• Experience with stability and control system design and assessment

• Strong skills with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or equivalent. Working knowledge of C/C++ a plus.

• Experience in aerospace industry required. UAS / UAM experience a plus.

• Prioritization, time management, relationship building, and eagerness to learn new technical skills

• Detail-oriented with strong, written, verbal, interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills.

• Ability to adapt, be flexible, multi-task and exercise independent judgment and discretion.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

• Ability to forecast, create, manage budgets and project activities.

• Ability to write internal/external proposals.

• Demonstrated supervisory and people management experience.

• Track record of revenue generating activities in government or commercial consulting services

• Demonstrated integrity, accountability, and professionalism
